Rounds Op Ed: The Balance of Power in the U.S. Senate Impacts You

Posted 9.9.14

We all know it – the Harry Reid led U.S. Senate is dysfunctional. They aren’t doing the people’s business. Yet, they are finding the time to push through Obama’s judicial nominees. And, that should concern us all – especially in the manner in which they’re doing it.

Since Harry Reid, the current majority leader, changed senate rules last fall, the liberal Obama Democrats have streamlined the confirmation of dozens of new Obama endorsed judges. They’ve managed to exploit and benefit from the very dysfunction they’ve created. Unfortunately, we’ll pay the price - as these new judges will serve lifetime appointments.

This U.S. Senate has not been able to pass a budget, get our debt under control, or rein in the federal bureaucrats – but they are managing to pack all levels of the judicial bench with left-leaning nominees. What Harry Reid did is referred to as the “Nuclear Option” – he changed the rules to only require a simple majority vote to confirm Obama’s appointments. Since then, twice as many judges have moved through the Senate with half as much scrutiny. Many of these Obama judges now dominate nine circuit courts - including the DC circuit, which will have the most influence in defending Obama's actions. These federal judges will be making rulings on the president’s overreaching executive actions, Obamacare, and Obama’s national energy tax for years to come.

Today, Democrats have the votes to continue packing courts with Obama’s liberal nominees. There’s only one way to change that.

The current balance of power is in the liberal Obama Democrats’ hands. What’s going on today matters and will impact all of us and our families for a generation to come. Republicans need to regain control of the U.S. Senate in order to reverse this trend. It all starts in South Dakota – as Republicans work to pick up at least six seats. If we don’t win in South Dakota – the impact will be damaging not only in South Dakota, but across the entire nation.

This is a president, a majority leader, and likely dozens of new federal judges who don’t share South Dakota’s values.

Let’s send a message on November 4, 2014. It’s time to reverse this trend.
